If you're referring to my post on the 1947 Handbook circuit, the 6L6  
output tube probably overkill.  Design aimed at driving typical rigs  
of the period as a substitute for xtal control.  A 6V6, 6F6 or another  
6AG7 would probably have been more than sufficient.
