Just got home from Minneapolis/St Paul last evening to find this,
Nick. Sad, sad news indeed. As others have said so well, Marty was one
of the true 'radio' guys in the crowd who enjoyed making the stuff
play as much as the history involved. He also enjoyed people, which no
doubt helps explain his interesting writings. As Eric noted, the
private exchanges were at least as amusing as those on lists.
Generally moreso.
Met Marty at Dayton a few years back after having corresponded online
for years. Expected to find a short little balding man with a pipe and
a cane, from his text. He wasn't like that at all. Last saw him at
Shelby in September set up down the row from you guys and next to
Meir. Spent about 30 minutes chatting between the two of them, no idea
it would be the last time.
Marty was one of those really likable guys who made it a point to have
fun with the hobby rather than obsessing over it. We really need more
like him. I'll miss him very much, reminded again that the only time
we get more time with someone is when we make it so.
