Nick, thanks for posting the link to Marty's obituary notice. 
He was really a modest and down to earth fellow with a great sense
of humor.

Doesn't that right angle local tuning adaptor make it harder to
tune, than just running the knob right off the receiver?
I think possibly an outboard Q-multiplier approach might serve
usefully to narrow the selectivity to usable. Using a 2-port
oscillator circuit like the cathode coupled oscillator, you might
even put the active components, 2 FETs, nestled right inside the
set, with an external pot in a small external box, for control.
