Michael,

That depends on whether you are trying to replace the TX and/or RX frequency
generation element, and what DDS IC is being used.

The problem with DDS is close-in spur generation. The most recent DDS, with
1GHz clocks or thereabouts, are much better than earlier ones. You can, I
believe, use these in both RX and TX service. The earlier DDS, such as the
AD9850 and family, are OK for TX use but not good enough for use with high-
quality receivers.

You might also look at the kits built around the Si570 - a rather nice
chip without
some of the problems of the DDS (and it's an 8-pin IC that even people
like me can
work with). There are kits available for the Si570 from Kees Talen
K5BCQ and others.
