Not my stuff and no interest in it, but a couple of reasons:
The seller might not know the value of an item. If he offered the set for
$5, he'd be swamped. If for $5 M, he'd likely not get any offers. If the
value is unknown, an auction is a time tested way to set a fair price.
(and 'fer crying out loud, let's not go into 'who is the most deserving to
have it'). Another ways include a "sealed bid" sale w/ or w/o a reserve.
If the seller were to offer it at a reasonable fixed price, he could well
get several bids. Since he likely has only one, the winner could well
depend on who reads his email the most often. That's a real good way of
making enemies.
