Robert Downs asked me to trace the wiring in my set of the DAV-2
loop and to compare my observations it to a schematic that he has started to
correct. He was correcting some errors that he discovered in his copy of the
Instruction Book for the Navy DAV-2 as well as some errata sheets . I sent
my findings to Robert and he has advised me that the revised schematic is
now available in his reprint of the manual along the revised schematic has
been cleaned up, new symbols added and connector pin outs are more readable.
I was impressed with the simplicity of the loop configuration, it is a
"shielded" loop that is unbalanced(one side grounded) and is center tapped
with jumpers for the frequency range. The loop is permanently mounted in
the molded plywood box. The user has to hold the radio to his body and
perform an aural null. The loop circuit has a no nonsense simple circuit
for injection of the whip antenna for "sensing"--- the sense circuit uses a
insulated plunger that is panel mounted to push a leaf type switch inside
the radio. An elegant design.
I like Roberts reprint manuals, they are clean, with excellent large
fold outs and I am able to spread the book out on the kitchen table and not
receive any complaints from my XYL as to the musty, moldy smell etc.
Perhaps an 80 meter and 6 meter DF event at Gilbert next year?
