This started around 1993 and was horrifying by 1998 when I left.  I heard
from my Dad as recently as late last year that it never got any better.  He
only went because he could get a certain item in bulk and inexpensively from
"The Chinese Tool Lady" who makes the rounds of all the swapmeets down that
way.  He would walk in, ask around for her, get what he needed, then leave.
