Don't feel too bad about making mods that make the radio useful. It sounds like you got the radio to use
in pursuing you amateur hobby. To me that makes more sense than not modifying it, letting it be useless to you.
I know you will hear that modifying it is almost akin to a "hate crime". But leaving it set around unused is a crime too, unless it is
in a public museum for such an item.
