Michael,

In looking for deals on batteries, heavy ones and sealed type, don't
overlook going "begging" at local hospitals and other institutions that have
large UPS systems.  They change out batteries regularly and usually are
happy to have some one drag off the replaced units.  Often you can find more
than 1/2 of the units still in very good shape.  They use both 12V and 6V,
often in series parallel configurations up to 48V.
