John,
There are no slip rings. If the commutators are deeply grooved, the only
cure is to disassemble the unit, remove the armature, and turn them down in a
lathe. Then you must undercut the mica spacers, which unfortunately
requires a special attachment. And install new brushes.
However, if the commutator surfaces are still smooth but only turned dark,
and the brushes are still good, there's really no need to do anything.
