I'm only just beginning to appreciate the different ways the services in
WW II handled comms.
In aircraft and AFVs there was a small crew, so voice was preferble, with
CW secondary. On ships and large aircraft, there were specialists whose
only duty was comms, and there was room and manpower for TTY or CW. Also,
text modes were far more suitable to encryption.
