I use a separate power supply for running up a receiver.
You want to protect the set's power transformer at any
cost. By using a separate power supply, you don't
endanger the set's power transformer.

I also use solid state diodes. Running a 80 or 5W4 at
reduced filament voltage is hard on the rectifier. Back
when tubes were more available, tube life time didn'g
matter. But things are different today
