I just recently came across a Navy model portable typewriter for radio
use. I want to share some info that I now have on this type of 'cw
mill' that might be of help to those who seek the same. I was looking
for the 'Army' version of this typewriter as it was used in the SCR 299
,. 399 & 499. Of which I have the 499 and the 399 awaiting restoration
and had been trying to find the typewriter with no luck as there was no
make or model # to even compare it too.

The Navy type writer I found is a Remington Model 5 and it is in Navy
gray. It was called the 'Streamlined' or 'Deluxe' model. Like the larger
upright cw mills as used by the Navy and probably the Army too it is
upper case only and the 'zero' key has the slash through the zero as
well as the type itself. Pictured in the large edition 1944 Radio News
Signal Corp equipment issue is pictured in an ad the operating position
of the SCR 299 showing a grainy picture of the type writer. This was all
I had to go on in trying to ID the type writer. Another distinguishing
feature of this particular model Remington is a small lever control to
adjust how hard or lite you want to hit the key just above the keyboard
and you can just barely make out in this ad photo of the typewriter the
lever control. I believe the Navy Remington and the Army one are the
same. I hope this information will help those trying to find the same
for their radio sets. I'd guess there where other manufactures too that
made these portables for the military in WW2 but this is all I've been
able to come up with after a 10+ year search.

This site has a photo of the Navy typewriter , just scroll down to see
it.
