Hue I never thot of limited choices. My 'goofy design' assessment
arose as follows

I and a pal spent a lot of time rattling thru the 884 schemat & noted
some neat features

  - CW on a FM set
  - Runs on all D cells - 11 of 'em!
  - Calibrate by 1.5 mc xtal & a comb generator. IF is 1.5 mcs
so marks every 1.5 mcs around 48 mcs - cute

An unexpected presence

  - FM AFC

And a horrid faux pas

  - VFO runs @ final freq. & tank tapped for tx & rx (tx-1.5mcs). Whew....
if battery V down by 10% then freq. off by 5%

FM AFC is selectable there & wudda been handy on BC-1000. But it's a
necessity on the 884.

The variable inside on 'freq select' has seven sections. One for VFO &
2 others for rx. VFO again & four others for tx. Getting them all
to track together must have been gawdawful. I bet depot manual was/is
a gem

But limited choices may have prevailed & they muddled anyway

After this adventure over, we thot we got further into the set than
NSA ever went.

Finally we did get the thing(s) on 51 mcs but rx/tx freq. sync there
only. Good news: one 7uh inductor. Suited us

Hope I didn't jam heads with techy stuff

  Marty
