FWIW, there was a new GRC-26 ("C" model, or maybe "D", IIRC) at the 
field training site site where I worked at Ft. Monmouth in 1954. The 
receivers were labelled R-388 and I thought they were the ultimate rx 
since I had not yet encountered an R-390 or 390A. I had never heard of 
mechanical filters.
