The below is some traffic that has passed between Jon K6ZKI & myself in preparation to provide communications support for the subject convoy. I have suggested the listed freqs because I have radios on those all the time & they are also monitored by others. Please read the entire thread & if you have any comments or suggestion, or you can also participate please contact Jon at skyzki at pacbell.net. He is also always on 3996usb Wednesday night at 22:00pst for the West Coast Green net(Eastern-Midwest net starts at 21:00central/02:00z).

3996usb, in the day time is good for over the horizon communications especially with NVIS radiated signals(folded over whip antennas). Good to communicate with stations within a few hundred miles. You already know what night time propagation is like.

5403.5usb, much like 3996 except comms are easier for several reasons(both day & night). Gray line comms between both coast are pretty common, after dark intercom like communications possible all over the US. Limited to 50 watts. Great band for the convoy to communicate with people as their passing through a state in the day time. Many commuters use it on their way home from work. I would concentrate on the use of this band!

14342.5, day time coast to coast comms with limited radiation & antennas very possible. World wide comms possible given the conditions. Ranges under 400-500 mile will be a problem. Good band but very congested, it will die completely after dark.

18157.5, much like 20mtrs but even farther communications possible. Good coast to coast, or coast to midwest daytime band. It too will die after dark. Advantage is no congestion at all.

Hey Dennis
I need your help with times of good propagation in your part of the country and on which bands so we can set up some skeds.
The Hornet will be able to work most bands and modes. I hope to have operators available to work the radio any hours that we have a chance.

I still have to go to work for a living so my day hours are consumed so my play time starts about 7:00 PST . Other members of HARC may be able to work a day time sked. If your up for some tests it would be cool to get an idea if  and when we can make the trip.

Thanks
Jon

I'd be happy to help in the comms schedule & participation. I'd love to be able to join the convoy but financial restraints prevent it.
I have radios on these freqs all day & into the night on some.
18157.5usb(HFpack & Milpack calling freq)
14342.5usb(HFpack & Milpack calling freq)
5403.5(HFpack & Milpack #2 calling freq)

For intra convoy communications I'd suggest 51.0 for those who are licensed & either 46.850 or 49.950 for those who are not.

Hey Dennis

I want to bring this event to your attention BC I think your the ideal contact to help make this a huge success.
I've read your articles on-line years ago when I started collecting green radios and I'm usually on the weds nite net on 3.996 USB with W6GER and the NWMRE group.
I'm with the USS Hornet ARC in Alameda ,Ca. The MVPA plans to convoy restored military vehicles from Washington DC to the USS Hornet..
I hope to organize a radio sked with the group that will be in the convoy. I believe that some of these guys are hams and will love to enhance the trip with radio contacts.
I'd like to get the word out in hopes of getting as many Mil radio guys involved as possible.
The convoy will rest along the way so if we could get local hams along the route to hook up with them and get them on the air would really open up our exposure. To get mil vehicle guys on the air with mil radios just seems like the only way to go. Here's a links about the convoy and I'll send an invite to join the Hornet yahoogroup if you would like to follow what's going on.
