Marty,
The receiver had at least a couple of versions (one is cabinet the
other is rack mount if I'm not mistaken): 128AY, 128AX.
I have a couple of 128AY's (or is it AX? - they're the ones in desktop
cabinets, I have to look at it when I get home...), one is working OK
the other one is hissing but deaf but no fireworks/smell, so probably
no biggie.
These receivers were part of the Federal Radio/Mackay setup on
Victory/Liberty ships - one of the vendors for the Maritime Commission
contracts in WW2, the other was RMCA. The 128A(*) were used into at
least the late 50's with post-WW2 Mackay equipped Merchant Marine
ships.
I'm not sure whether the 128AY was also a US Navy "regulation"
receiver, I have to look into my sources and maybe someone will chime
in with info.
As to receiving SAQ with it, I tried a few years ago with the Mackay
but nothing. In fact I received nothing even with much better VLF
receivers... Last year I tried with the RAK and then with the 1960's
vintage Siemens E310 ("Rainbow") marine reciver which is an excellent
performer but still nothing.
I'll make you a copy of my manual, I may have already scanned and
saved it. I'll have to look in my manual archives on my server at home.
