I bought the 618S1 that I have at Fair radio about four years ago. They have many items in the back warehouse that are not listed in their catalog and have to wonder if they know what they have back their. at the time their were several ARC-38A sets in different condition, couple complete and several parts units. think I bought the last complete 618S but know their are at least couple 38A sets their. I did find a 618S1 in a different part of the backroom last year that appeared complete but it had the "modified for SSB" statement across the front of the case so have no idea why it had a 618S tag and the SSB statement. myself almost always use AM for HF operation and have newer and way better sets for SSB so have no interest in a SSB version. they also have several of the 38A control heads, I was using a 38A head with the 618S for a while and just ignoring all the frequency setting stuff. You can pull the stick on label off the 38A head mode control ant it becomes a 38 head. think that may be the only difference. of course the wiring and connecters are different but the components values and function are the same. removing the sticker from the 38A head I have reveled AM and AM narrow mode.
