I know all too well. It took a while to be able to differentiate
between them, some of that time being spent letting the smoke out. As
I understand it, this is generally not considered a good thing.
One thing I did when I was still making the breadboard receivers was
to roll my own paper caps using either Kraft paper or waxed paper,
dependent on which I had on hand. I never pushed them past 90v since
the receivers used that as the B+ so really have no idea how far I can
push them before they fail. (That would probably be an interesting
experiment some day.) Another thing I made was sliding plate variable
caps that also weren't pushed past 90 volts so, again, I don't know
what they could handle.
My test equipment is minimal at best which puts some limits on what I
can and can't do but I seem to recall methods of testing leakage using
pretty much what I have on hand so it may not be all bad after all.
