Phil's right - I got more info from Geoff WB6NVH who says:
-------------------
That receiver is the Bendix-Frieze Div. radiosonde receiver, which is an
R-17A, part of AN/FMQ-1.

Bendix bought the National 1-10 assemblies from National and built them into
this chassis. The R-17A is built into a large rack cabinet with strip chart
recorders and other stuff, hence their never being found with cabinets now.
An AC power supply and an S-meter circuit was added.

They were supplied only with the 58-88 MHz coil set, or whatever the coil
set was that covered 70 MHz, although you can theoretically use any 1-10
coil set since the front end is identical. These receivers were used most
extensively during the Berlin Airlift and won praise from the military
during that year.
