I use and uncalibrated the S-meter on my BC-348 setting the BFO to 
cener/vertical I tune in a SSB signal for maximum needle deviation then 
adjust BFO to zero in on the side band conversation. 

I placed the "S-meter" in the AVC detector circuit as described by the 
tune up procedure on page 5-4 part of paragraph 9, so it doubles as the 
IF alignment indicator when required.

This modification was performed in 1971 when there were plenty of 
surplussed BC-348's to go around.
