I can't take much credit. Showed up in the Seattle Times this weekend
without the picture but I discovered the original point of publishing was
the Peninsula Daily News and it had one picture.
Hen I was much younger, I performed security and crowd control as a member
of Civil Air Patrol at Paine Field for the air shows. Nice opportunity to
get very close to the Blue Angels.
I need to make point of catching the next public display up there as well as
making another visit to the Boeing Museum of Flight to take in the WW
airbirds and displays.
Another Paine field project is restoration to flying condition as well as
static display only ME-262s: http://www.stormbirds.com/project/index.html
Live in greater Seattle. Typically only get out/south toward Shelton unless
I'm making run down the Oregon coast (gotta hit that museum some day - tough
to do - wife not into this stuff).
I do remember the Meigs incident.

Greg

Greg, nice find.
I mean - the article.
I am always pleased to see an article of topic interest in some little
regional paper, altho I always have to wonder about the majority that
possibly never get noticed. Ditto the frequent obituaries these years
of noteworthy WW2 veterans.
My father attended a Memorial Day feature at Paul Allen's "Flying
Heritage Collection" at Paine Field in Everett WA. One of the panelists
of B-17 crewmen, a decorated pilot captain, told about a hit on his
plane
that blew off part of one side, and 2 crewmen blew out with the wind.
He did get the plane back. Maybe this airfield rings a bell with some
as the recent posted link to a Japan firebomb balloon article mentioned
Paine Field. I see a recent article that says another WW2 aircraft
collection will soon have a home at Paine Field.
Are you out on the Peninsula, Greg? If so - were you living out there
in 1980, when the retired troopship 'General Meigs' went onto the
rocks at Neah Bay? Would have been a nice tourist attraction, but
then the Navy went and blew it to hell.
