Ben,
I've done exactly what you suggested, namely buy a piece of gear and then
when a better specimen shows up, sell off the lesser one. I've done it
with all sorts of equipment, especially test gear. As an aside, I'd sell
off a bunch more, but for the hassles of eBay or the effort of taking it
to a flea market. Neither option appeals to me.
One reason I oppose chopping up radios is that some wanna-be sees some
tarted up set and thinks "waaay kewl" and then goes shopping for a really
nice NOS set and burchers it. Won't happen you say? Well, I've seen the
price of some mil gear go through the roof because the Audiophools covet
the knobs for their crap.
