While it's true that a lot of paranoia over radioactive material 
is nonsense- based on ignorance and fear,
the problem with things like Radium dust is ingestion,
especially into the lungs.   While it's likely to be coughed
right back up again, there's a decent chance of it becoming
lodged in one area, bombarding the same set of cells,
and the consequences of that are nasty.
Why take that chance, when effacing the threat
is so easy?
