You think it's a nightmare to repair?
Think about when it was issued to the troops to replace our R-390's to do Morse intercept. No variable BFO. No selectable Bandwidth for each mode. And if your signal was at the jump over point in the front-end tuner you had no way of properly tuning in the signal.
For maintenance the biggest problem we had was the Power Supply Module. Components were very close to their operating voltage specifications (mostly Capacitors) and would fail. Especially when operated on generator power. We would look for caps that were spec'd 20 volts over the applied voltage and physically fit. We never had anymore PS Module failures. Lots of Radio Shack parts were used.
And those pico fuses that were almost impossible to get at that time.
The receiver is a good SW receiver and does a decent job but it's no replacement for the R-390's when it comes to Morse intercept.
It was a pet project of the NSA and all the original parts lists had NSA part numbers for all the components and were a real pain to cross reference to FSN/NSN's. And some of the IC's were custom made for NSA.
