I've been using my Wireless Set 19 MkIII with the original AC supply
for something around 10 years now. The only precaution I take is that
I run it on a Variac, feeding it 110 VAC exactly. I have the set on
sometimes for 4 hours at a stretch (on receive, transmit periods on CW
are much shorter of course within this timeframe). The power supply is
slightly warm to the touch, but not hot.
I may be very lucky and it could be a matter of time, but maybe just
keeping it fed with lower than the "modern" line voltage helps its
longevity.
I use this set on the Wireless Set 19 Net on 80 M - conditions
permitting and also to work some DX. Sometimes I run one of the MkII's
on 12 VDC with the dynamotor supply.
Indeed, the WS19 has a distinct sound, but so do the GRC-9, BC-223,
ATD and other military sets I have on the air regularly. Easy to
identify the outstations in the net...
