FYI, LeMay was a "full" general (i.e.: 4 star), not a Lt. Gen., in 1957. 
His date of rank was 29 October 1951. He commanded SAC from 1948 until 
July 1957 when he was appointed Vice Chief of Staff, USAF in which 
position he served until July 1961. Following his stint as vice chief, 
he was appointed Chief of Staff, USAF (CSAF) until his retirement 1 Feb 
1965. He was the inveterate no-nonsense "cold warrior", and we need some 
like him now.
