Actually, the discussion started from the standpoint of a leather
treatment that can also be used to clean wrinkle finishes on radio
equipment.  Tannery leather cleaner/conditioner was the specific
product since it contains no lanolin while most other products do.  It
kind of branched into two independent threads - cleaning wrinkle
finishes and leather care - afterward.

Saddle soap was one of several products I used on my briefcase and it
kept it quite nice looking.

Vegetable tanning isn't the best in the world for the reason you noted
among others.  Sadly, it's becoming more prevalent in crafting leather
which means anything I'd like to last past me may well follow me into
the grave, figuratively speaking.  I guess that since Noelle will go
before me, it doesn't really matter.
