You are right John, but in practice the ARN 7 actually outperformed a Taiyo commercial ADF with much larger crossed stationary loops. The R5A  ARN 7 rcvr might have just been better than the Taiyo was. The ARN 7 was a fine BCB DX rcvr with a long wire.

The ARN-7 is an airborne unit with a small antenna, designed to DF
owerful stations for navigation.The bigger the loop, the better the S/N
hould be and the bearing accuracy also.
That said, I still doubt ship location by LO DF was anything but a cover
tory.
