Well, actually that's only half of it (steel versus aluminum). TM 11-850
(1946) says steel was substituted for aluminum in the chassis and boxes at
BC-312-L and BC-342-L. Prior to that, those components were aluminum. The
'46 edition only gives one weight for each of the four variants (312, 314, 342
& 344) but if you dig into some of the earlier manuals on the earlier
models, including the single-model preliminaries, you find not much difference in
the weight. Whether steel or aluminum, the panel and chassis thickness
(gauge) is generally greater in the 312 series than in the 224/348's. I
haven't gone out and measured all of it but I'll just make a wild guess and say 12
gauge versus 16 gauge. Or something like that. The cabinet sheet metal
seems to be around the same in both groups so the difference there must be
steel versus aluminum.
