Saw this in "Profile Aircraft 124 Curtiss SB2C-1
Helldiver" Sept. 1982:
"In the spring [1942] Curtiss-Wright was informed
that 3000 additional [to 578] would be ordered for the
Navy, the contract change being signed in June [1942].
Meanwhile radar (ASB), IFF (ABD/ABK), and new radio
(ATC and ARB) installations were designed and mocked
up for approval....December 1942 saw the first SB2C-1s
delivered to a fleet squadron...The results were sufficiently
bad for the Yorktown skipper to recommend that contract
cancellation be considered....VB-6 and VB-4 were then
issued SBDs to meet their combat schedule...
On 21 October 1943....first [SB2C-1] combat operations....
I just thought it kind of interesting that the ATC was being
installed this early in WW2.
