Here in the States we're holding regular nets with these WW2 to Korean
War vintage radios and some of us even work DX with them.
We also have a net dedicated to the Wireless Set 19.
In fact we had (myself personally as well) WS19 to WS19 contacts with
UK and other European stations.
We use WS 19's, GRC-9's, BC-223's, BC-1306's, BC-654's, TCS and other
such low power military radios successfully for ranges of a few
hundred miles as a matter of routine. Admittedly, with the advantage
of using fixed station antennas these radios have better range, but a
properly tuned field radio with the correct field antenna, on a clear
frequency should yield reasonable results, consistent with the ranges
as specified in their respective technical manuals.
