I would expect carriers later in the Pacific War to have
some TTY equipment. But certainly a ship large enuff
to carry TTY equipment would also need people trained
in TTY maintenance, and also spare parts and even
whole spare units for swap out. You do not have that in
WW2 submarines.
As for detectability, i repeat, so what. If the enemy could
not crack the code encrypted CW, detecting TTY was not
a big issue. But it may have been a worthwhile experiment.
I do have one photo of a Navy shore station, either Okinawa
or Guam, i forget. In it you can see a couple TBX (yes) being
used apparently as link or monitor receivers and also a couple
TTY machines (but cannot see the receivers used to drive the
