[Milsurplus] what's it for?

Not only the weight, but the 140D models pulled 79 amps when transmitting and had a starting current of over 120 amps when operated in a vehicle with a 6 volt system. The 80D units drew about 70 amps when transmitting and had a starting current over 100 amps.

In the old police cars they just did not transmit when in pursuit unless absolutely necessary. When the Levece-Norvel alternator "cut in" it was like putting on the brakes. The speed of the vehicle would drop between 20 and 30 mph when the PTT was activated.

You sure stirred up some memories when you mentioned MTLA 80D. I remember installing -4- of those suckers in a bureau agents car way back when. 2 high band and 2 low band. Gads, now days it would break the suspension!
