If German U-boats waited off the Eastern Coast of USA,
they were possibly close enuff to monitor harbor
communications in the MF band. I would wonder why to 
a  U-boat's cramped quarters would be added a 
crytologic team, when the heavy lifting could possibly 
be done back at Kriesmarine headquarters and transmitted
to the subs, as already were information on sightings, 
directions to rendezvous with convoys, and so on.
Also i note that waiting offshore, U-boats were within 
radio range of the 20 watt transmitters used by at least
2 radio teams, one in Quebec and one in New York 
state, however i do not know how long these teams 
operated before being rolled up. ( I have the radio sets
