Hope everyone had a good Thanksgiving.
Back in September, the Castle AFB Museum had
an open cockpit day, and I saw a couple things
that bear mentioning.
1. We've all seen BC-348s with an SO-239 hacked
into the front panel, but the RB-36 had one with
a real SO-239 mod. A small box mounted over the
antenna post area, with an SO-239 on the top, and
labled "Radio Noise Shield". With a cable installed,
it would have made tweaking the Antenna Align knob
somewhat difficult.
Anyone seen one of these before, or know of the details?
2. Also in the RB-36, there was a switch panel, lableled
"RECORDER" that had switch positions labled BC-348, and
AN/APR-something.( I think it was a -4, but I could be
mistaken).
Was the BC-348 used in an ELINT role? I was wondering if
this had anything to do with the SO-239 mod above, but
there is no guarantee that the above mentioned BC-348 belonged
to this particular RB-36.
3. The C-46 was open, with a complete AN/ARC-3 installation.
This particular aircraft had seen postwar service with the
Japanese Air Force, and in the cockpit, I saw a junction box
that referenced a J/ARC-4. I doubt that this referred to the
AN/ARC-4, just wondering if anyone knows what this did reference?
Thanks
