Would be useful for switching rhombics I might guess?Is it just a big 
switch or are there frequency dependant components inside?

I've spent some time with those things. 
It is the Antenna Switch for a pair 
of BC-446 LF Loop Radio Range Transmitters. 
The antenna was made up of two loops placed 
90 degrees to each other. (Breck, you can 
explain all this.) The picture with two sets 
of four insulators is the transmitter side. 
The other side is the antenna side, and the 
switch knobs are on the ends. You wouldn't 
want that thing to be made of metal.
