In all likelihood, the original owner used what was then
a CHEAP B.C. band receiver to use as an I.F. for a ham
band converter such as those made by Gonset, Morrow,
and others. From his point of view, a radio that MIGHT have cost him
$5 made far more sense than screwing with the costly
factory installed B.C. radio. While I didn't do this with
an ARC-5 type B.C. receiver, I did convert the 1.5-3.0
MC/s receiver to use with a Morrow 5BR-1 converter to
use as my main station receiver. This would have been
somewhere around 1955-1956. I still had the unit until
a tornado destroyed our house in May of 1999. I had no
room to retain all the stuff I had accumulated in 46 years
of hamming, and regretfully, that went to landfill as well
as a perfect BC-221 and TS-323(?) 20-400 MHz counterpart.
Tough decisions made under severe stress at the time that
I wish I could have back, but that is how it goes some times.
Don't berate somebody for making a decision to modify what
seemed at the time to be an unlimited supply of stuff that
hardly anybody really wanted at the time.

It's a 6 volt converter to be mounted under the dash of a '50s car. Note the car ant jacks: in and out.... 73 de don ad6pb
