They were invented, at least licensed, by Motorola in the early '30s. 
Galvin Mfg came up with name Motorola as a combined name of 'Motor" and 
"Victrola", for their motor vehicle radios.  RCA (Hazeltine licensing) had 
claim to Victrola, so they "borrowed" part of it as RCA was a very widely 
accepted trademark.
