Hi Richard and Friends, 
                      I can tell you my personal experience, after some 
useless effort to strip the old paint (a bi-component paint not sensible to 
paint strippers). 
I sand-blasted the front panel, then I re-painted with NITRO PAINT of proper 
colour (I went to color shop and the made for me checking original colour), 
than I filled the engraved letters with SARATOGA WHITE MARKER PAINT (sharp 
the edge before lik you do with a pencil), if you employ NITRO paint you can 
take away white color in excess with TRIELINA (diluent) because NITRO pain 
isn't sensible to trielina. You can see my work at the following link :
