The RCA Model 10K (150 kC/sec - 60 MC/sec) console 
radio that my dad bought in Oklahoma City somewhere 
around 1936 or 1937 had lots of metal tubes, including 
6L6 push-pull output tubes driving a 12" electro-magnet 
speaker with resonance tubes down in the bottom of 
the big (close to 4' tall cabinet).
