I actually heard an "explanation" for this silliness:

You see; the wiring in the hovel of the lowly
middle-class commoner dumps out electrons
in a hap-hazard manner, like spilling golf balls from a basket.
They are removed from their atomic orbits in a random fashion,
coming off the orbit slightly "out of step" or "out of phase"
with the electrons before and after.
These phase errors add up over time.
The "current" and "voltage" we unwashed read
with our primitive meters and scopes can display only
the "mean" or "average" of these fine phase errors,
but the golden ears of the "enlightened" can easily discern
the decreased brilliance and depth of the sound stage,
crinkling of the interspatial harmonic upsomodeium,
and di-bifurcation of the sub-wompus doodledumms.
The "special" power jacks and cords,
oxy-free wire and Western Electric solder all
act as "filters." Once the power leaves the wall,
those single-crystal copper wires and cryo-treated
contacts act as drill sergeants,
getting all those electrons marching in step-
little soldiers, off to battle and conquer
the very last outpost of Good Sense.
Hail, the conquering heroes!
