Thanks, BINGO! It indeed has a thin metal case, the transmitter and the
receiver sections have the red RCA logo, like the original aircraft versions
and they also have the add-on jack panels you mentioned. The case inside has
a printed paper sticker saying "Transmitter and receiver, part of SCR-288"
and all kinds of RCA patent numbers, and the RCA Company address.
According to what you're saying, did the original Swedish contract have the
separate transmitter/receiver chassis bolted together, as opposed to the
later US-contract, BC-474 which were built on a single common chassis and
panel?

The model number IS the RCA part number, the MI-number.

The set does have a thinner case than the BC-474 nameplated
radio, right? 

It looked to me that the government simply took RCA's production
that was headed for Sweden contract and possibly modified them
while they were being built. Accounting for those headphone and
key jack add-on panels. -Hue Miller
