Good evening all,
Last week (I think it was) there was a thread running about a different
subject but which mentioned the R-649 as a sort of side issue. That
reminded me that 20 - 25 or so years ago I bought five or six R-649s
from the DRMO at Griffiss AFB, NY. IIRC, the units had been removed from
Coast Guard Station Sodus Point (?) on Lake Ontario. The units were in
so-so condition and most of them came with a nice power line isolation
transformer since they were used in a shoreside environment.
I thought I was going to keep the best of the lot for myself and sell
the rest of them to folks who wanted a so-so general coverage receiver.
Silly me! They were pretty lousy receivers - all of them. I wound up
giving the things away to get them out of my way. The unit I kept for
myself became parts after a couple of years. So here's the deal: I have
the set of IF transformers, the BFO transformer, and the 12 RF coils for
the front end. I'm not sure if that's all the front end coils or not but
it must be most of them. I saved the tuning gang too, but haven't turned
it up yet and may no longer have it. I also have the "R-649A/UR"
nomenclature plate, for serial number 97, contract number TCG 39599, in
pretty nice condition, as well as the "Operating Instructions" plate
that goes on the front panel. I DO NOT have any of the Halliscratchers
skirted knobs - sorry, traded them off years ago.
This stuff is available to anyone who needs/can use it just for the cost
of USPS postage from ZIP 36605 - Mobile, AL. Please reply off-list if
interested.
