Why use 18?
Because 18 is nicer that 20 mtr.
It's somewhat like 160 mtr when
propagation is not so good. Also
some good beacons(?)in the 17.5 to
18 MHz broadcast band.

P.S. Trivia: There were NVIS tests
run during the H-Bomb test in the
early 60's. Question was what did
the blast radiation do to radio waves?
HF Log-Periodic antennas were placed
around the Pacific area. All had
Tx and Rx capability. Now get this,
the LP's were made of wire strung up
between two tall poles, and the short
element was on the bottom. The antenna
was shooting into the ground. So I guess
the earth was used as a reflector.
I was involved with puting the LP up on
Okinawa. To add to comments, Army was
experimenting with small horizontal loops
in Nam, I've heard. 73 Agn
