a few years ago I was a guest of the Admiral of the carrier task force
out of San Diego on the John C. Stennis CVN-74 as a group of 10 men we
had a guide and toured the ship from bow to stern, top to the bottom and
on the flight deck right up to the foul line while trapping, F-18, E-6
Prowlers. We were at the point where we could touch them just by
stepping over the white line. They were doing day/night carrier
qualifying. We were supposed to go aboard by C-2 COD but they were all
in the mideast so we did not get trapped or a CAT shot. We went on board
in a HUP-21? and off on a S-43 Infuriated palm trees trying to beat
themselves to death. Very interesting 30 hours it is a true ballet of
teamwork, average age was in mid twenties. Radio room was off limits and
CCI and the reactor other than that it was open ship. The cost on board
was for rations like $9.51 total general mess for morning and midday
and Admirals mess for the evening meal. This is an ongoing thing
arranged by the Navy League.
