Derived from the late 30's Hallicrafters HT-4 as mentioned by others.
According to the "Green Books," originally drafted into the Army in 1940 for use in
the SCR-299 along with the BC-342 and 312 receivers as a stopgap means of
filling a requirement for a "100 mile in motion vehicular radio." The system
was the brainchild of one Col. Olmsted who became head of the Signal Corps later
in the war. Green books report the 299 as "nearing production" in 1941 so
probably in service by 1942. Required some serious ruggedizing upgrades along
the way.
