I'm not understanding this, John. Certainly both sides had "trench
sets", radio, that transmitted at least a few miles, or to observer
aircraft above.

I have a German transmitter from this war, about 100 some watts
in, and when i tried it out, decades ago, it actually put out dozens
of watts power (not narrow band power, for sure! )  This will eventually
go to auction - i really should have liquidated this asset long ago, as
it does me no good. August Link of radioarchivest Ebay fame has the
same model transmitter, and i'm surprised he hasn't sold off his either.
