Hi Ed & gang:
I have several Scott receivers of various models and all have that
lineup of four 4mfd bayonet mount can caps. They are not the usual
bayonet style as the base is bakelite or phenolic -- insulated -- with
two leads coming out through the bottom. From the parts lists and
schematics, I think these are actually oil-filled paper caps rather than
electrolytics. In one case, the cap snapped off at the base as they are
right alongside the chassis and vulnerable when the receiver is carried
or moved outside of its case.
If what I surmised is true, you can replace with large value orange
drops or yellow poly caps. I've seen values listed as high as 2 mfd.
An alternative is to use a can electrolytic of higher value. I've been
told you can go substantially higher - 8 or 10 mfd.
2 mfd caps could be wired in parallel, but you have to fit 8 of them
under the chassis in that corner. I think it's do-able.
However, NOS capacitors of the same type may not be good due to aging on
the shelf. Also, in the design, they chose to use insulated caps -- the
cans are not grounded. With the more typical bayonet mounts, there is
only one positive terminal and the can is the ground connection. As I
recall, I don't see any polarity indications on the schematics, nor
color code for the leads.
Anybody else familiar with these?
regards,
Barry
