[Milsurplus] SCR-583 thoughts

Aside from the weight factor, which was maybe what killed this
radio, as the weight rules out its infantry use, compared to the
SCR-284 which was multi use, the SCR-583. I do not like that it
has but 1 IF, compared to the 284 set two; the variable BFO is
an unnecessary luxury; but-
-it does use 7 pin minis in the receiver, 1T4 etc.
-it does use 2E22 final
-it offers 4 xtal channels rec. & trans.
 
The handcrank generator is a bizarre thing. the gen itself GN-54, 
remains in the large accessory cabinet which actually mounts on
the seat tripod. Handcranks are inserted into the sides of the
accessory case. I swear this is true.
Yes, you HAVE seen this radio, altho in a photo looking like a 
Mexican postage stamp from 1929. Look at an old G&G advertisement
from sometime in the 1960s or their catalog. -Hue Miller
